The Calçada do Souto Farm is an agritourism project implemented in the Municipality of Marco Canaveses in Vila Boa Quires in October 2012. In the middle of a rural environment, the farm provides an ideal opportunity for those looking to escape the hurly burly, and enjoy a simple life integrated in nature, while enjoying all the comfort and luxury of a modern home. Lovers of wine tourism find here the ideal place to explore and participate in wine production. The old restored houses, keep all the romance of the countryside and invite you to the dream of rural tourism.

Farm characteristics

The farm has a vineyard of 5 hectares in full operation since about 1900, always belonging to the same family. The two cottages that belonged to the farm, the Calçada House and the Souto House, were recovered for tourism, currently enjoying various leisure facilities such as swimming pool, table football and table tennis, and a nature observatory.
These houses are situated around the vineyard, being complemented by a pine forest and a stream within the perimeter of the farm. A scenic path goes through the farm and joins the two houses, allowing easy and pleasant access to the facilities shared by them, such as the old threshing floor and eaves.

The area is ideal for those who enjoy walking, with footpaths drives through the pine forests of the surrounding hills, or through the vineyard and the brook.
The farm enjoys a large variety of plants and trees natural to the area beyond the vine, as for example, chestnut, cherry, plantain, pine, eucalyptus, oak, olive and many others. The varied relief which is mainly mountainous, alternating forests and cultivated fields, is favorable to the growth of a wide variety of native and cultivated flora.

Farm's History

The farm belongs to the Sousa Ribeiro family for several generations, passing from parents to children, who always endeavored to maintain the existing assets, and to improve it and increase it if possible. The farmhouse and its grounds were manufactured by workers living in the farm under the guidance of the Sousa Ribeiro family.
The revolution of the 25th April 1974 caused the progressive abandonment of agricultural land, and the farm entered a period of decline, but never failed to cultivate and reap the tasty wine. The vineyard was laid out in terraces, with high vines, which became in time an obsolete situation, and made its manufacture difficult, expensive and therefore uncompetitive.
Thus, in 1997 the vineyard of the farm was modernized, turning it into a farm adapted to modern times, providing the most current machines, and selected varieties of grapes.
The vineyard is now in full vigor, producing about 40 tons of grapes annually. The recovery of existing houses surrounding the vineyard improved the farm even more, transforming it again in a zone mark.
